Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Esto, Florida. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, with centers located throughout cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Many employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and individuals on probation favor hair testing. This method's key advantage is its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, and it's almost cheat-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has come to be regarded as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 strands of hair (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the sample. We suggest confirming the sample weight using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, the same amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step involves ensuring the sample is appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. While it is a cost-effective measure for dismissing drug usage in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that exhibit presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in methods such as urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug testing notably challenging.

Verification of any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that are presumptive positives are cleansed before Confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is checked under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a much briefer detectability range.
  • Difficult to adhere: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage history: It provides a drug use profile over an extended duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Individual factors like hair color and growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although typically called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
