Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Everglades, Florida. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol screen, our expertise is in hair testing. We offer testing centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made options.

Lately, drug testing methods have shifted towards hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests, especially those with zero-tolerance policies. The advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection timeframe, often reaching up to 90 days, with monitored collection, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the developing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection time frame of up to around three months for alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands of hair (around the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If hair from the scalp cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This process includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid examination for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated to stand in court. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate an ancillary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at a notably diminished concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a trend of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It usually takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug assessment methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing holds significant advantages over urine testing in Everglades, FL. Its superior detection period allows for a more comprehensive overview of substance use, highlighting its effectiveness compared to traditional urine tests. While urine tests are limited in their detection windows, hair tests cover a broader timeframe.

While urine tests can only spot recent usage, hair follicle tests showcase their ability to track usage over an extended period. This feature makes hair testing a top choice for those needing thorough and effective substance use detection solutions.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing is unparalleled due to its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days. This capability is invaluable for employers in Everglades, FL, providing a thorough insight into an employee's substance history and ensuring workplace safety by offering a detailed view of past substance use.

By allowing a glimpse into a prolonged substance use history, hair follicle tests furnish a meticulous account of an individual’s usage patterns. Employers benefit from having a comprehensive history, helping in making informed hiring and staff management decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant method that significantly reduces the potential for sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are difficult to manipulate, providing Everglades, FL, with reliable and unquestionable results, crucial for maintaining integrity in substance testing.

The robust nature of hair testing ensures that sample tampering is nearly impossible, culminating in a trustworthy method of detecting substance use. This reliability in results is essential for accurate decision-making in sensitive situations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
