In Feather Sound, FL, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations. If you require hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing can help. We have nationwide locations ready to perform these tests, provided you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom options.

Lately, hair follicle testing has gained popularity as a method for drug screening. Employers, the legal system, and substance abuse experts often prefer this over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle analysis is favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probation officers due to its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. For drug use detection within a short span of 5 days, urine tests still dominate in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in the hair’s fibers as it grows. When harvested close to the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to falsify, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp can supply 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It’s advisable to weigh the hair sample with a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, and others).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a hair drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase of a sample within a lab’s system. This process includes confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not captured through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid for legal purposes. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is one reason why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage pattern: Provides insights into drug use patterns over time, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Feather Sound, FL, hair follicle testing edges out urine testing due to its superior detection capabilities. Hair tests provide a longer drug-use detection window than the traditional methods. This makes it an ideal choice for employers prioritizing reliable detection and minimizes the risk of erroneous negative results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
