At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Flamingo, Florida. For those in need of a drug or alcohol test via hair analysis, we are experts in this field, offering services at testing centers across all US cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for testing. Hair samples can be evaluated for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or via custom testing methods.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become an increasingly common method for substance testing. Businesses, legal institutions, and substance counselors are opting for this test over standard urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services utilize hair follicle drug tests. Its key advantage is a broader detection window, generally up to a 90-day period, captured through an observed sample collection method, making tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain unmatched for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substance use by preserving biomarkers within its growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection range for alcohol and drugs extending up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to collect, difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, equivalent body hair may be used. Note that when discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory system. It involves confirming that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is economical for ruling out drug presence in the bulk of samples, a positive result must be corroborated to be legally viable. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This process involves drug extraction from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of all positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely capturing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the scalp’s hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Flamingo, FL is proving superior to traditional urine tests. It offers enhanced precision in detecting substance use, making it indispensable for employers and institutions. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can trace back drug use over an extended period, offering more comprehensive insights.

The key benefits of hair follicle tests over urine tests include a wider, more accurate detection window. This reliability helps employers enforce stricter drug policies with greater confidence. The robust nature of hair testing prevents common issues related to adulteration or false negatives often seen in urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

In Flamingo, FL, hair follicle testing provides a unique advantage with its extended detection window. Unlike other methods, it traces drug use over a much lengthier period, up to 90 days. This long detection time gives employers deeper insights into an individual’s substance history.

Employers find hair follicle testing advantageous as it thoroughly examines drug usage patterns over time. This prolonged timeframe ensures a comprehensive evaluation, allowing for informed, confident hiring and employment decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
