Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Myers Shores, Florida. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we excel in hair follicle examinations, offering numerous testing sites across the nation. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body should suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, the judicial system, and probation cases rely on these tests. Hair follicle tests provide an extended detection period of up to 90 days, are conducted within a monitored setting, and are nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand during growth. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can present up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 strands of hair, comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil, near the scalp results in 100mg of hair, the preferred specimen for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extensions, and/or tests comprising more than 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferred. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. By head hair, we mean solely scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core procedures in the laboratory assessment of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid evaluation for substance abuse. While being a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most specimens, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples that indicate a potential positive in Screening undergo further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptively positive result, more hair is acquired from the initial sample and set up for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a much lower concentration than alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a reduced detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a use pattern of substances over time, beyond mere recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other drug testing strategies.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Fort Myers Shores, FL, hair follicle testing offers a superior alternative to urine tests. The enhanced detection accuracy makes it a preferred choice for employers seeking reliable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
