Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Pierce South, Florida. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, with facilities throughout all cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Users typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, taken from the scalp or body, for most tests. Hair samples can be screened for various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, or tailored for other specific tests.

Lately, the preference for conducting drug tests has shifted towards hair follicle drug testing. It's increasingly required by employers, legal courts, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing no-tolerance drug policies, along with courts and probationers, now favor hair follicle screens. The test's key advantage is its extended detection range, generally up to 90 days, collected under observation, and difficult to falsify. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use, within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained prominence as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of these substances by encasing biomarkers within its growing strands. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it offers up to a roughly three-month detection window for both alcohol and drugs. This type of sample collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch piece comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both initial analysis and validation. For tests that include EtG, extended panels, or exceed 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. It's advisable to measure the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. The term head hair solely refers to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test in the lab involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial input of a sample into the lab system. This process includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any outstanding data input not handled by an electronic custody chain.

Screening is a preliminary, economical assessment to detect the presence of drug abuse. While Screening effectively eliminates drug use in most cases, a positive result here requires further confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples with a positive indication from Screening need secondary verification.

For samples tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is used from the collected sample for further testing in the Extraction stage. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair, even at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral tests), highlighting the challenge of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation of any preliminary positive result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing before final analysis as required. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection duration: Various substances can be identified in hair for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter terms.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are notoriously difficult to deceive, ensuring results that are more reliable.
  • Tracks usage history: It reveals patterns of substance use over extended periods rather than only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become traceable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: These tests typically incur greater costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Results variability: Differences in hair color and growth rates can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair shaft instead of the root beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
