Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Fountain, Florida. Need a hair drug or alcohol screening? We specialize in hair testing and have facilities across cities nationwide for conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method over the years. It's now frequently used by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of the conventional urine test. Hair tests are favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, including courts and probation conditions. The main advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, up to about 90 days, under direct observation, making it hard to circumvent. For recent drug use within 5 days, however, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust means for detecting the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands encapsulate a lengthy history of substance use by ensnaring biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When harvested proximate to the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month span for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for evaluation and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial logging of a sample into a lab’s system. This incorporates ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening embodies an initial expedited assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that appear positive initially in Screening require another verification.

If a sample seems positively inclined in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are taken from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared with other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory course from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can find drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over a timeframe, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It necessitates about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicles under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
