Offering comprehensive drug analysis, Accredited Drug Testing provides advanced hair follicle drug screening in Freeport, Florida. If you're in need of drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide, including centers in every city. To conduct a hair test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically required. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has grown extensively. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse authorities now often opt for this method over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance work environments, courts, and probationary programs favor hair tests for their extended detection range, making them hard to manipulate. Though, urine tests remain the gold standard for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a comprehensive history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the head, hair can offer approximately a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is suggested. If head hair is lacking, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample in a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may not supply.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be verified for legal evidence. Samples that test preliminary positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening shows a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screen is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All probable positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for roughly 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: A hair drug test is very difficult to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides insights into drug use patterns over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
