In Fruitville, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug evaluations. If you're seeking a hair or alcohol assessment, we're specialists in hair testing, with facilities across every U.S. city ready to conduct your exam. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Hair assessments can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening. More employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair analysis over urine tests. Hair tests are popular with employers enforcing strict zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probationary entities. Its main advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days through supervised collection, making it nearly foolproof, although urine tests are still preferred for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture substances from the bloodstream, providing a historical record by embedding biomarkers within the hair's structure. A sample cut near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug use for a period of up to three months. Hair samples are straightforward to obtain, tough to tamper with, and convenient to send to labs.

A suitable sample consists of a 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (about the diameter of a #2 pencil), cut near the scalp, yielding 100mg—the optimal quantity for testing processes. For tests such as EtG, or those beyond 10-panel screens, 150mg of hair is ideal. A jeweler’s scale can be used for precise weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types, like facial or armpit hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory testing procedure for drugs includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample is logged into a lab system. This stage verifies the sample's integrity in terms of sealing and shipping, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by electronic documentation.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for the presence of illicit substances. Although efficient for dismissing drug usage in the majority of cases, any positive screenings require further validation to be legal. Samples that are positive during Screening must go through an additional confirmation step.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, substances are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods like urine or saliva testing, making hair drug analysis a challenging technique.

Positive results identified in Screening are verified through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. These samples are also washed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistant to manipulation: The accuracy of hair drug testing proves higher due to its resistance to tampering.
  • Shows usage trends: A hair test can reveal a user's drug pattern over time, instead of only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent intake: Drugs take 5-7 days to appear in hair after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as the color of the hair and differences in individual hair growth rates may influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
