Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Gateway, Florida. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our company is an expert in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide ready to perform the procedure. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can suffice. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to custom hair testing preferences.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction in drug screening processes. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair testing over standard urine tests. These tests are adopted by zero-tolerance employers and required by courts and probationers. Hair tests boast a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are extremely difficult to manipulate. Still, urine tests reign when assessing drug usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as a potent tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair chronicles a prolonged history of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of ongoing hair growth. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch sampling of approximately 200 hair strands (mirroring the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, a corresponding amount of body hair can be taken. When we talk about head hair, we're specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps within the lab process of evaluating a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system, which consists of confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry that wasn’t provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening marks the initial rapid assessment for addictive substances. Despite Screening being an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in the bulk of samples, a positive result requires confirmation for admissibility in court. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening stands as the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of presumptive positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as indicated. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which present a more restricted detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering a hair drug test is tremendously challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It furnishes a chronological pattern of drug intake across a span of time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair samples.
  • Pricing: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug evaluation methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth disparities can affect the level of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
