In Glen Saint Mary, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in such evaluations is unmatched, with centers available across the nation to serve your needs. For most tests, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body hair can be used. Our analyses cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom options.

An increase in the use of hair follicle drug testing has been noted in recent years. This method is now preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often rely on hair tests for their extended detection ability, reaching up to 90 days. Although effective, hair tests aren't optimal for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, where urine tests excel.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is viewed as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance intake by trapping markers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, it can show up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, has a moderate resistance to tampering, and is simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary screens, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We recommend measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. For head hair discussions, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair covers all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and sent, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any supplementary data not input by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening does a quick initial test for drug traces. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally credible. Samples with presumptive positives at Screening need a secondary validation.

Should a sample present presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (like urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair testing is exceptionally challenging.

All positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. Each lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair testing can verify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine analysis which offers a shorter window.
  • Challenging to falsify: Altering hair test outcomes is extremely difficult, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Reveals usage history: It shows a pattern of drug use over a period, not only immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Doesn’t reveal recent intake: It usually takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair analysis.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier compared to other drug screening approaches.
  • Variable results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Glen Saint Mary, FL: Hair follicle tests provide superior drug detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests, with the ability to identify substance usage over a longer timeframe. This makes them an excellent choice for employers and institutions enforcing zero-tolerance policies. The reliability of hair testing far surpasses that of urine testing, ensuring precise insights into substance usage.

The advantages of hair testing over urine tests in Glen Saint Mary, FL, are apparent. With a broader detection window and improved accuracy, hair follicle testing offers a more comprehensive assessment of an individual's drug history. This distinction ensures that drug use is identified and addressed more effectively, aligning with the goals of maintaining a drug-free workplace and environment.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Glen Saint Mary, FL: Hair follicle testing detects drug use over an extended period, typically up to 90 days. This broad timeframe offers a more complete picture of an individual's past substance use. For employers, this is particularly valuable, providing insights that help assess potential employees or monitor current staff effectively. The extended window surpasses the capabilities of other testing methods, such as urine testing.

In Glen Saint Mary, FL, the reliable hair follicle test stands out for its extended detection window, delivering comprehensive insights into an individual's drug use over months. This prolonged period enables employers and institutions to gain a thorough understanding of substance histories, supporting informed decision-making processes that ensure a safer and more drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Glen Saint Mary, FL: Hair follicle tests present a formidable barrier to sample tampering. By requiring hair samples rather than bodily fluids, the very nature of these tests reduces the risk of adulteration or manipulation. This method ensures that results are reliable and beyond question, offering employers and other users peace of mind that the data reflects true substance use without the interference seen in other testing forms.

In Glen Saint Mary, FL, when integrity and reliability in drug testing are paramount, hair follicle tests excel by minimizing tampering chances. The secure collection and analysis ensure that the outcomes obtained are genuine, unaltered portrayals of an individual's substance use history. This reliability is crucial for institutions relying on accurate assessments to maintain compliance and uphold safety standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
