Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Middleburg, Florida. For individuals needing a hair drug or alcohol examination, our team specializes in hair testing, and we've established facilities in all cities across the country. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, either from the head or body. Our hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for substance detection. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are opting for hair analysis over conventional urine tests. This approach is favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial entities, and individuals under probation. Hair tests offer an extended detection window, up to 90 days, making them nearly impossible to evade. However, when determining drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses have emerged as an effective method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a retrospective record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of its strands as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection scope of about three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for both testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for measuring the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparably sized portion of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we are exclusively speaking about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial sample handling within a lab's system. This process verifies the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and incorporates any additional data not offered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening performs a preliminary fast evaluation for substances of abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a positive outcome in Screening necessitates confirmation to stand legal scrutiny. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening do require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at markedly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a notably demanding procedure.

Confirmation for any positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples undergo a cleansing process prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, counter to urine tests which feature a briefer detection period.
  • Resilient against fraud: Hair drug tests are tough to circumvent, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insight: Offers insights into drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the underlying hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
