Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Golden Gate, Florida. If a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area and operates testing facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient for the test. Hair evaluations can investigate drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored hair test options.

In recent times, drug analysis methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair drug testing over the traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with stringent drug-free policies, legal entities, and individuals under probation. A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection window—usually up to 90 days—using a supervised collection, hardly allowing for fraudulent results. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended account of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When cut near the scalp, hair can reflect drug and alcohol use for up to around three months. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch length containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, the same quantity of body hair can be used. When we talk about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures involved in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake of a sample into the lab’s system. This phase ensures that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for substance abuse. While it provides a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most challenging to execute.

The verification of any positive Screening findings is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Merits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: The robustness of hair drug tests makes them hard to manipulate, enhancing accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It highlights a usage pattern over time, beyond recent consumption alone.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs are noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are costlier than other testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
