Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Greater Sun Center, Florida. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in such assessments, with centers in every city nationwide to facilitate testing. An inch and a half to two inches of hair from the scalp, or body hair in certain instances, is necessary. Hair screenings can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair tests.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. A variety of employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate hair testing as opposed to traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug use regulations, judicial systems, and individuals undergoing probation. The standout advantage of hair follicle tests lies in their longer drug detection span, extending to roughly 90 days, collected under direct observation, and presenting minimal opportunities for deception. However, urine tests maintain their reliability for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of substance use by holding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately three-month detection window for alcohol and substances. Collection is straightforward, tampering is somewhat challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) collected nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four main steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This task involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data not included in an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening presents a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive findings in the screen must be validated to be acceptable in legal matters. Samples that are presumed positive in Screening do necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing represents the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed as required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably difficult to alter the results of a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the beneath-the-scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
