Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Greensboro, Florida. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair testing, with centers located in every city across the nation to carry out hair tests. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Over the years, the method of drug testing has increasingly used hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, along with courts and those on probation, utilize hair follicle testing. The main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, gathered during an observed process, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of hair strands capture biomarkers, providing a long-term history of alcohol and drug use. Hair collected near the scalp offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, posing challenges to tampering, and the samples are easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp amounts to 100mg, which is ideal for testing and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. When scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair mean scalp hair exclusively, while body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The processing of drug test results in a lab includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the entry of a sample into the laboratory system, ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fulfilling any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might omit.

Screening involves a preliminary drug abuse test. Though it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive results must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples showing preliminary positivity require additional confirmation.

A sample testing presumptively positive in the Screening process undergoes further Extraction with more hair taken from the initial collection. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid tests, making hair drug screening highly challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screening result involves methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positives are washed as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests are limited to a shorter duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty of faking a hair drug test enhances the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It shows a drug use pattern over a timeframe, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
