Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Gulf Stream, Florida. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we've got you covered. Specializing in hair testing, our centers are available Nationwide. For most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. Our analyses detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored in zero-tolerance environments, probation, and legal contexts. A key advantage is the extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days, with strict observation protocols, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, for drug use identification within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of drug usage by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When the sample is collected close to the scalp, it provides a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred amount for initial screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and examinations surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is best to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In scenarios where scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent body hair sample is acceptable. The term 'head hair' references scalp hair specifically, while 'body hair' denotes all other varieties like facial or axial hair.

Process Summary

The laboratory handling of a drug test result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial reception of the sample into a lab's system. It checks if the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase performs an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. Screening is a cost-effective approach to disqualify drug use in the majority of samples. However, to be legally valid, a positive screen must be confirmed. Samples that yield a presumptively positive result in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptively positive outcome in Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing the toughest technique to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to compromise: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Track historical usage: It reveals a history of drug use over time, beyond just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug screening methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
