Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Gulfport, Florida. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair testing, with testing centers available Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body are needed for testing. Hair can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method of drug testing in recent years. They are frequently required by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals as an alternative to standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services due to their much longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, conducted through an observed process, and difficult to tamper with. However, a urine test remains the most accurate for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When gathered from the area nearest the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional assays, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all non-scalp hairs (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial handling of the sample within a lab’s system. It involves checking that the sample is appropriately sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any needed data entry absent an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen needs verification to be legally valid. Samples positive in the Screening stage require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this stage, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleaning before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical information: It shows a drug usage pattern over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing? Hair follicle drug testing is gaining a foothold over traditional urine tests in Gulfport, FL, thanks to its extended detection span and superior reliability. Unlike urine tests that track drugs over a few days, hair tests can detect substances for up to 90 days, offering a far more comprehensive assessment of a person’s substance history.

Furthermore, increased detection accuracy empowers organizations to maintain higher safety standards. Hair testing captures a wider timeline of substance use, giving it a significant edge over urine testing. By opting for hair follicle tests, entities can ensure more holistic and accurate drug screening methods.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window sets hair follicle testing apart in Gulfport, FL. The ability to discern drug use over the past 90 days offers employers a much deeper insight into an individual’s substance use. This prolonged detection period is particularly beneficial for businesses seeking to uphold comprehensive substance-free policies.

Employers gain a panoramic view of an individual’s substance use history through hair testing. Long-term assessment through hair samples aids in recognizing patterns in substance habits, promoting long-term safety and adherence to policies. Employers equipped with such extensive data make informed decisions on workforce suitability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The Tamper-Resistant Nature of hair follicle testing bolsters its position as a superior drug testing method in Gulfport, FL. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
