Hair testing enables detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a prevalent method for drug screening. This approach is increasingly preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary bodies favor hair testing due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days. Although highly accurate, urine tests remain more suitable for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended timeline for tracking substances like alcohol. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of roughly three months. Hair sampling is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and can be transported with ease.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken close to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and verifying results. For EtG screenings, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is preferable. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. 'Head hair' refers exclusively to scalp hair, while 'body hair' includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key phases in the lab processing for drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is logged into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes additional data input not available from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial assessment for drug presence. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive finding necessitates confirmation to be legally binding. Samples rendering a positive result in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluids, making hair drug screening one of the more challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is achieved through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocol and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can detect drug use over a 90-day period, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, yielding more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.
