Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hialeah Gardens, Florida. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing and boasts facilities nationwide that can administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for testing. These samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. The primary advantage of this method is a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, rendering it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting recent usage within five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeline of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step confirms that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If Screening results are presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before Confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeline.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
