Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hiland Park, Florida. Should you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities nationwide to facilitate this. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be utilized. We offer tests not just for drugs and ETG alcohol but also provide custom hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred choice over traditional methods. They are increasingly mandated by employers, judiciaries, and addiction counselors. Hair follicle tests cater to firms with zero-drug tolerance policies, legal entities, and individuals under surveillance. Their extended detection window, up to 90 days, is a major advantage. Despite this, urine tests remain accurate for drug use detection within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and additional substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, quite challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Review

The four primary steps entailed in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample was secured and transported properly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any added data input not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening do require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other procedures (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite tough to alter a hair drug test, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical information: It can present a pattern of drug usage over a certain period, not just recent consumption.

Constraints:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
