Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Holopaw, Florida. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers across all U.S. cities ready to conduct a hair test. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair may be employed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing choices.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. They are demanded by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of the usual urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers due to their longer medication detection window, lasting typically up to 90 days. Additionally, they are performed via supervised collection, making them tough to tamper with, though urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for thorough analysis. For tests involving EtG, additional screenings, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair is suggested. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When referencing head hair, it strictly pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The process for obtaining a drug test result in a lab involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails introducing a sample into the laboratory’s system initially. This process includes ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data input unavailable from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid examination for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in a majority of cases, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. All samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample is identifiably positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing a challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Before confirmation, all samples presumed positive are washed if necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period of detection.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug byproducts within the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself scrutinizes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Holopaw, FL is favored over urine tests due to its ability to provide superior detection accuracy and reliability. With a longer detection window and reduced risk of tampering, hair testing offers a more thorough and dependable view of substance use, which urine tests often cannot match.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
