At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer extensive hair follicle drug testing solutions available in Hunters Creek, Florida. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise is in hair sampling, supported by our testing locations in all major cities across the U.S. Typically, you're required to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair either from the top of your head or elsewhere on the body. Hair tests facilitate detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair analysis choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly utilized for drug assessments. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance specialists now favor hair analysis over conventional urine screenings. Hair follicle screenings cater to zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and individuals on probation. Key advantages of hair analysis include an extended detection timeframe spanning up to 90 days, ensuring observed sample procurement, and presenting difficulties to manipulate. Nonetheless, for identifying most recent drug use within a five-day span, urine testing remains the predominant choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair provides an extended record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled close to the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands, approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil, near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for testing and validation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. Scalp hair specifically refers to hair on the head, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for abuse drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for it to be permissible in legal proceedings. Presumptive positives from Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is one of the more challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary prior to confirmation. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Shows historical usage: It evidences a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent usage: Drugs only become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites found.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
