In Intercession City, FL, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair sample analysis ensures accurate results. We have centers nationwide, making it convenient to access our services. For testing, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed. The hair can be tested for various substances, including customized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular in recent times. Compared to traditional urine tests, hair tests offer a longer detection period, making them the preferred choice for employers and courts. These tests support zero-tolerance policies and offer a reliable method for monitoring individuals on probation. Although urine tests are still best for detecting recent drug use within five days, hair tests prevent attempts to cheat due to their observed collection process.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an influential method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair traps biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands, offering a historical record of alcohol and drugs. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal substance use over an approximately 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately tough to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal volume for screening and confirming results. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair is an alternative. By head hair, we mean solely scalp hair, whereas body hair refers to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps for processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of entering a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick check for drugs. Although cost-effective for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can show a timeline of drug use over months, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Intercession City, FL, surpasses urine tests by offering enhanced detection capabilities. It provides a more accurate portrayal of an individual's drug use history, making it the preferred choice in many circumstances. Hair tests are less susceptible to manipulation, ensuring trustworthy results that traditional urine tests may lack. This reliability highlights its superiority in detecting substance use over an extended period.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
