Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Inverness Highlands South, Florida. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise is in hair testing, and we maintain facilities in cities across the nation capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body for analysis. Hair samples are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing choices.

Recently, the trend towards drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals are often opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation requirements. A notable advantage is the extensive detection period offered by hair follicle testing, often reaching 90 days, with tests conducted under supervision. For identifying recent usage within 5 days, urine tests retain higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximate 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for assessment and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we're specifically addressing scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in laboratory processing of a drug screening outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encapsulates the initial handling of a sample into the laboratory system. This process includes verification of proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial evaluation for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to hold weight in legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a further confirmation.

If a sample is provisionally positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting substances from hair at concentrations significantly lesser than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result utilizes methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed prior to confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • Hard to cheat: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can display a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair hue and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
