Accredited Drug Testing provides full hair follicle drug testing services in Jasmine Estates, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair assessments, offering facilities across all cities Nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body can be used. Analyzing hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer a hair drug test over a regular urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officials employ hair follicle tests. The key advantage is its extensive detection window, which typically reaches up to 90 days, achieved through an observed collection, making it nearly impossible to circumvent. Nevertheless, for monitoring drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Through capturing biomarkers in the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair reveals a long-standing history of substances. Hair, when collected near the scalp, can detect alcohol and drugs for up to roughly three months. It is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, serving as the perfect sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or testing exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' pertains to all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab’s system by ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary rapid inspection for drugs of abuse. Though Screening efficiently eliminates drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court acceptance. All samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (for instance, via urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing methodologies.

Confirmation occurs for any positive screening outcome using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days previous, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to cheat: It is exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Conveys historical data: It documents a sequence of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
