Located in Kenwood Estates, FL, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those requiring testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is collected. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists often opt for this over traditional urine tests. This preference is due to the longer detection window—up to 90 days—and it being collected under supervision makes tampering nearly impossible. However, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged profile of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair that are in the process of growing. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can offer a detection time frame of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and conveniently transportable.

A hair specimen of 1.5 inches, roughly 200 strands thick (comparable to a #2 pencil), nearest the scalp delivers 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent body hair amount may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specify scalp hair exclusively. Meanwhile, body hair includes types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug test results encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where samples are integrated into the laboratory’s system. This process verifies proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any missing information not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary fast assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumed positive during Screening require further Confirmation.

Should a sample be presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for processing in Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods, such as urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug testing challenging.

Positive Screening outcomes are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is analyzed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter vulnerability period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It illustrates a recurring substance use pattern over time, not limited to immediate past use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent consumption: It generally requires 5-7 days before drugs become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Discrepancies in results: Hair aspects like color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually evaluate the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
