Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Laguna Beach, Florida. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with service centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

In the past few years, utilizing hair follicle drug tests for substance screening has become more prevalent. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for a hair drug test over the standard urine test. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary individuals favor hair follicle tests. A key advantage of this method is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, with tests conducted under observation, making them difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, a urine test remains superior for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands. Obtaining hair near the scalp allows for up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. Scalp hair specifically refers to hair on the head, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation as primary steps.

Accessioning involves the preliminary entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for substances. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal use. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening need secondary verification.

For samples testing presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are removed from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of positive screenings is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use history up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which detect recent usage.
  • Cheating difficulty: Attempting to alter a hair drug test is particularly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: It offers a usage pattern over time, not just immediate use data.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair typically takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
