Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities in every city across the country ready to conduct these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for analysis. Our hair tests target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recent trends show an increase in employing hair follicle drug tests for drug screening. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair testing over conventional urine testing. This method is popular among employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, the courts, and for those under probation. Hair follicle tests have the advantage of a longer detection window, lasting up to 90 days, are conducted under direct supervision, and are virtually tamper-proof. Yet, urine tests remain highly accurate for detecting drug use within a short 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

The detection of drug and alcohol consumption has seen hair testing become a significant tool. By storing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs. When taken close to the scalp, it can supply around a three-month window for detecting both alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to adulteration, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. When referencing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair relates to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, and others).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is broken into four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the basic processing of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any extra data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody tool.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Screening provides a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage in most samples; however, any screen yielding a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples that are positively presumed in Screening do need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. Drugs are removed from hair at a much reduced concentration than in other processes (such as urine or oral fluid), which is the reason why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a smaller detection window.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus the results are more dependable.
  • Provides historical insight: It offers a trace of drug use across a timeframe, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Detection delay for recent use: Drugs need around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair development can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
