Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug tests in Lake Harbor, FL. Whether you need a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis shines, with testing centers accessible nationwide. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair screening can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various tailored testing options.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become a common method for drug screening. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over urine tests. Used by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers, hair follicle tests boast an extended detection window of up to 90 days, expert observation during sample collection, and are rarely deceived. Yet, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain tops in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive profile of alcohol and other drug use over time. When gathered from near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for up to a roughly 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both initial screening and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is nonexistent, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. Specific reference to head hair implies scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample processing within a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry that was not digitally provided.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive outcome must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Presumptively positive samples in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Should the Screening phase indicate a presumptively positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are obtained from hair at significantly lower levels than other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the guidance of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to alter a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Reports usage patterns: It offers an overview of drug consumption across a duration of time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Metrics like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment pertains to the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lake Harbor, FL, hair follicle testing stands superior with a host of benefits over traditional urine tests. Its increased detection accuracy helps employers maintain a drug-free workspace effectively. Hair tests are highly resistant to tampering, significantly limiting chances for false negatives, offering a trustworthy option that reinforces policy reliability.

Urine tests can miss recent substance use, but hair follicle testing shines with its long detection window. While urine tests reflect only recent drug usage, hair testing provides a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history, enhancing the screening process's thoroughness and dependability.

Extended Detection Window

Lake Harbor, FL, benefits significantly from the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing. Able to chart substance use for up to 90 days, it affords employers a detailed view of a person's drug habits, supporting comprehensive background checks.

Unlike shorter detection methods, hair follicle testing captures an extensive history of drug use. Lake Harbor organizations gain deeper insights into past behaviors of potential hires, particularly useful for safety-sensitive positions, ensuring more informed and confident hiring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Lake Harbor, FL, hair follicle drug tests minimize tampering risk effectively. By analyzing hair samples, which are challenging to manipulate compared to other testing forms, it ensures the integrity of results. Hair testing offers administrative security, which reinforces trust in drug testing outcomes.

Hair follicle testing deters those attempting to cheat the system. Unlike urine tests, which are vulnerable to adulteration, hair samples are nearly impossible to alter without detection. This robust reliability helps employers and legal bodies base decisions on factual and sound evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
