Situated in Lake Worth Corridor, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers detailed hair follicle drug assessments. For any hair drug or alcohol analysis needs, Accredited Drug Testing excels in these tests, supported by numerous testing centers across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair analysis options include drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in detecting drugs. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judges, and probation officers. Hair follicle testing benefits include a longer detection window, generally up to 90 days, ensures observed collection, and reduces cheating. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol ingestion. This is because hair retains a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it is capable of offering a detection timeline of up to around 90 days for both alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be sourced. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This process includes confirming the sample's secure sealing and correct shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial test to identify drugs of abuse. Though Screening provides a cost-efficient method to rule out the use of drugs in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that screen as presumptively positive need further confirmation.

When a specimen appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is subjected to reviews under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can reveal drug use history extending back up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timespan.
  • Hard to falsify: The integrity of hair drug tests makes them challenging to falsify, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage pattern: It can illustrate a usage pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
