Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Lakeland Highlands, Florida. Should you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers located in every city across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug screenings have become increasingly common as an approach to detect drug use. Employers, legal authorities, and addiction specialists now prefer hair over traditional urine testing. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, judiciary systems, and those on probation regularly utilize hair testing for its primary advantage: an extended detection period, often up to 90 days, with an observed collection method that is nearly impossible to evade. For drug use within the last 5 days, however, urine testing remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a valuable method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair, it provides an extended record of substance use. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month history of alcohol and drug usage. The process is straightforward for collection, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional components, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the material is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair is an option. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into the laboratory's system. This entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective measure to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples testing presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are drawn out from hair at much lower concentrations than other mediums, like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening a more challenging methodology.

A positive screening result is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is regulated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more restricted detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, which contributes to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It shows a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests,” the examination actually pertains to the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Trumps Urine Testing in Lakeland Highlands, FL
When comparing hair to urine tests, the comprehensive detection and heightened accuracy of hair samples stand out. Hair testing offers a superior drug-use history profile thanks to its prolonged detection window, leaving little room for erroneous results.

Hair tests are favored for their credible findings, whereas urine tests hold limitations, especially when aiming to ascertain recent usage within just a few days. Employers value hair testing due to its precise traceability and reliability, surpassing what traditional urine methods offer in detecting long-term usage.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing identifies drug use over an extended timeframe, up to 90 days, providing employers with a full view of an individual's substance history. This detailed insight surpasses the short-term snapshot offered by other testing methods, allowing for more informed decision-making.
Employers in Lakeland Highlands benefit from a comprehensive understanding of applicants' or employees' drug use histories, aiding in maintaining workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
