Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lakeview, Florida. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, boasting testing centers across all cities in the nation to carry out hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other bespoke hair testing solutions.

Recently, the method of drug testing has increasingly relied on hair follicle drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are favoring hair drug tests over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are adopted by employers with strict anti-drug use policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection time, generally up to 90 days, with observation ensuring collection integrity, and making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, urinary tests still offer the most precise results for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair can deliver an extended view of alcohol and other drugs, capturing biomarkers within the layers of the developing hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can show consumption up to about a 3-month duration for alcohol and other drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the nearest point to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In situations where scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. In discussions of head hair, specifically scalp hair is meant. Body hair includes any other type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core phases of laboratory processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the start of integrating a sample into the laboratory's workflow. This step consists of confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of concern. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive outcome must be validated to be accepted in legal settings. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening will necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drug compounds are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging technique to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have briefer detection spans.
  • Tough to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is incredibly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over a timeframe, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drug detection in hair typically requires 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual variations in growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
