In Lakewood Park, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in hair analysis for drugs and alcohol, our nationwide centers perform these tests efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. We offer customized hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common. Preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies and court systems, these tests are favored over standard urine tests due to their long detection period of up to 90 days, making them difficult to manipulate. However, for recent drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for unveiling drug and alcohol consumption. Hair gives an extended timeline of substance use by encapsulating biological markers within the strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide an approximately three-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Gathering hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to manipulation, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the head offers 100mg of hair, the optimal portion for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary analyses, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest determining the specimen’s weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar volume of body hair is acceptable. Regarding head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a laboratory involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory phase of logging a sample into a lab’s framework. This step consists of making sure the sample was sealed and shipped accurately, allotting a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any further data inputs absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Screening offers an economical method to dismiss drug use in the bulk of cases, however, any positive findings necessitate verification for court acceptability. Any screenings where drug presence is suspected require subsequent confirmation.

If drug presence is suspected during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the starting sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs present in significantly lower levels than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), demonstrating why hair drug analysis is the most challenging process to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen result ensues through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples are rinsed before confirmation as necessary. The lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specialization and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a more limited timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, increasing the accuracy of the findings.
  • Provides historical data: It supplies a comprehensive view of drug usage trends, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs typically need 5-7 days after use to become identifiable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing types.
  • Variations in results: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often named "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
