Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Laurel, Florida. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our specialty lies in precise hair testing, with facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other needs.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained popularity for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer them over urine tests. These tests suit employers with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and those on probation due to their extended 90-day detection, observed collection, and immunity to tampering. Despite this, urine tests still offer superior accuracy for recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for uncovering the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of exposure to alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a quantity of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the samples using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. With head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test result processing involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into a lab’s framework. This phase includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-effective method for eliminating potential drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a test show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Preparation in the Extraction stage. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations than those found in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug examination poses greater challenges.

Confirming any positive screening outcomes is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use extending up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to deceive: It is quite challenging to bypass a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insight: It can depict a timeline of substance use over a duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Results variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Advantages of hair follicle testing in Laurel, FL, include superior drug detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. Hair tests offer longer detection periods for comprehensive insight.

While urine tests are standard, hair testing proves more effective and unshakeable, making it tough for potential abusers to deceive results within a 90-day span.

Extended Detection Window

In Laurel, FL, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing offers a thorough view of substance use history over a period of up to 90 days. This stays unparalleled compared to more traditional methods.

With this prolonged detection, employers acquire a comprehensive understanding of an applicant's or employee's substance use, ensuring informed decisions about their workforce.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests provide tamper-resistant analysis, minimizing the risk of sample tampering. This technique ensures unquestionable results for substance screening in Laurel, FL.

Through the resilience of this testing method, employers and authorities can trust their reliability, deterring attempts to manipulate outcomes and upholding integrity in testing protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
