Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Lely Resort, Florida. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing and has locations across the country that can administer such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In recent times, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening has been more prevalent. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are trusted by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probationary programs. The key advantage is a longer detection window, often up to 90 days, with sample collection that is supervised and difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting very recent drug usage, within the last five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the developing hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. Head hair denotes scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample in a laboratory's system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen needs confirming to be valid in court. Samples that show presumptive positive outcomes in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

When a sample is identified as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is collected from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation, as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to inspection under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical patterns: It can indicate a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs typically take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly named "hair follicle tests," the test itself assesses the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
