Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lockhart, Florida. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with locations across all cities in the US that can administer it. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening in recent years. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals often opt for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probationary protocols employ this method, as it offers a longer detection span—usually up to 90 days—and is more resistant to manipulation. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for substances used within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for ascertaining the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and various drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When extracted close to the scalp, hair can deliver a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we are referring specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves these four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and forwarded, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial swift assessment for drug misuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient measure to eliminate drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive Screening must be substantiated to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that indicate positive presumption in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a positive presumption in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most intricate methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair requirements and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can indicate drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Circumventing a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can present a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
