Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Lowell, Florida. Whether needing a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair assessments, with facilities nationwide ready to execute these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. Tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other tailored hair screening needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular in recent times. Many businesses, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists now favor this method over conventional urine tests. Employers with stringent drug-free mandates, legal systems, and those on probation often opt for hair analysis. A significant advantage is its extended drug detection ability—up to 90 days—coupled with an observed sample collection, minimizing deception attempts. Yet, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain highly reliable.

What it is, How it works

The method of hair testing is now recognized as an effective means to detect usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a recorder, capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, thus preserving a prolonged account of substance use. A sample taken close to the scalp can offer a detection window of up to three months for various substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

For effective screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch portion comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp provides 100mg, deemed an ideal specimen size. For tests like EtG, additional testing or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to gauge the specimen's weight is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, body hair in equivalent quantity may suffice. By head hair, we mean hair sourced specifically from the scalp, whereas body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for rendering a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing into a lab’s system. This step confirms the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any manual data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as the preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although it provides a cost-effective way to eliminate negative samples, screens returning a positive result must undergo confirmation for court admissibility. Those tested positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result at Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. During this stage, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening as a methodology.

Confirmation of any positive findings in Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples deemed presumptive positive are washed prior to final confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug tests boast a detection timeline reaching up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which register shorter spans.
  • High reliability against cheating: Due to the difficulty of tampering with hair drug tests, results yield higher accuracy.
  • Chronological insights: Offers an overview of substance use trends over time, beyond merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediacy: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp that is analyzed.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests, making it a preferred method in Lowell, FL. Unlike urine tests that detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a comprehensive history of substance use, enhancing reliability and reducing chances of manipulation.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of up to 90 days makes hair follicle testing unparalleled in accuracy when it comes to identifying past drug use. Employers in Lowell, FL, find this feature invaluable as it presents a thorough overview of an applicant's drug use history, aiding in informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
