Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

In Ludlam, FL, Accredited Drug Testing expertly conducts thorough hair follicle drug screening. Whether it’s a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialized hair testing services span across all cities nationwide, accommodating hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals opt for these tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and for those on probation. A key advantage of hair tests is the extended detection window, capturing substance use for up to 90 days — a process that's closely monitored and highly fraud-resistant. Though, for recent usage detection, urine tests remain unmatched within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective measure for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a comprehensive history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the fabric of the elongating hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) is needed near the scalp to obtain 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample amount is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for precise weighing of the specimen. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. Here, head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core process stages in the lab analysis of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's infrastructure. This step involves confirmation of proper sample sealing and dispatch, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any outstanding data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive outcome needs confirmation to hold in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is collected from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screen outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection range: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a lesser detection span.
  • Difficult to compromise: Circumventing a hair drug test is notably challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can map out a sequence of drug use over time, as opposed to merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Drugs typically become traceable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though referred to as "hair follicle tests," the procedure scrutinizes the hair shaft and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
