Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Malabar, Florida. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities in all cities across the nation equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be utilized. Hair screening can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now insist on hair drug testing over standard urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals use hair tests for their unreliability. The main advantage is the extended detection window of about 90 days, collected in a supervised process, which is virtually uncheatable. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, a urine test remains most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a valuable method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extensive historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in its strands as it grows. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to about three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of approximately 200 strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation processes. For tests analyzing EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. In situations where scalp hair is not present, equivalent body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. All other forms, such as facial or axillary, are categorized as body hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedures are categorized into these four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample upon entry into a laboratory. This phase ensures the sample was securely sealed and appropriately shipped, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and enters data as necessary, especially if not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for the presence of drugs. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach for dismissing drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples that test preliminary positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation step.

For samples testing positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction step. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening a more challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation testing on any positive results from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples testing preliminary positive are cleansed as necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the complete laboratory procedure is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests recognize drug usage for up to three months, surpassing the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug testing poses significant challenges for tampering, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a drug use pattern over extended periods, as opposed to recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs generally take around five to seven days before they appear in the hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests," these tests actually assess the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
