Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Marco, Florida. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing extends to numerous testing centers across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body is needed for analysis. Our tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing choices.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test has become a preferred method for conducting drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs utilize hair follicle tests for their extended detection period, often reaching up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it difficult to falsify results. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for substances like alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, with little opportunity for tampering, and easy to transport.

A small sample, 1.5 inches in length with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For more specialized tests such as EtG, or for panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is suggested. To ensure accuracy, the sample should be weighed using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar amount of body hair is acceptable. In regard to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample upon entry into the laboratory’s system. This step confirms the sample's integrity and proper shipment, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry not supplied through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a quick initial examination for prevalent drugs. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate most samples for drug usage, to be court-admissible, a positive result from Screening must be confirmed. Presumptively positive samples necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this step, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than in methodologies like urine or oral fluid testing, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Samples showing presumptive positivity are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests uncover substance use over a 90-day span, unlike the shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Due to its stringent nature, cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Traceable usage patterns: It not only detects recent drug use but can also reveal long-term substance use habits.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs typically become detectable in hair 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher costs: Generally, hair drug testing entails higher expenses compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual discrepancies in growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly identified as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
