Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Matanzas, Florida. When you require a hair-based test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert in hair testing. Our facilities located across every city nationwide are equipped to offer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has leaned more towards the hair follicle method. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse experts mandate a hair test rather than a conventional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and probation programs. The foremost advantage of these tests is their extended drug detection period, lasting up to 90 days. This test is carried out under direct observation, making it highly reliable against tampering. Nevertheless, if you're testing for recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 90-day detection range for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in diameter) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For additional tests, such as EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable quantity of body hair might be gathered. In our context, head hair specifically means scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome consists of four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage of integrating a sample into a laboratory's system and entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for the presence of drugs. Although it is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples presumed to be positive during Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is amongst the most intricate methodologies to execute.

Confirmation for all positive screening findings is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug consumption for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistance to cheating: Altering the outcomes of a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus increasing the accuracy of the results.
  • Chronological usage data: It delivers an insight into drug usage trends over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the process itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
