Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in McAlpin, Florida. When requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair assessments, with centers available in all National cities to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard procedure in recent years. More employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts prefer this method over standard urine tests. Hair tests are favored by organizations with strict drug policies, the court system, and for individuals under probation. The advantage of a hair test includes an extended detection window of up to 90 days, obtained through a supervised sample collection, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a timeline of drug and alcohol usage by embedding biomarkers within the cortex of the hair as it grows. When the hair sample is taken near the scalp, it offers roughly a three-month detection period for substances like alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to deliver.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmatory testing. For EtG tests, add-ons, or panels over 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's best to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be absent, collecting a matching amount of body hair is acceptable. The term 'head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The main steps involved in laboratory drug testing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of the sample into the lab system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any data not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an expedited initial assessment for drug presence. As an economical approach, Screening effectively identifies drug-free samples, but a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening must undergo further validation.

Should a sample be flagged as presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods such as urine or oral fluid tests, which is why hair drug screening is the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a lesser detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers consumption history: It provides a pattern of drug intake over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
