In McDavid, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests, our facilities are available nationwide for your testing needs. For testing, ensure you have at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or other body parts. Our hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair testing over standard urine tests due to enhanced reliability. Employers focused on zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals benefit from hair testing’s ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, a feature of its observed and tamper-proof collection process, whereas urine tests excel at identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair reveals a potential detection period of nearly three months for substances. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches, composed of roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil), gathered closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest the specimen be weighed using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When specifying head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in laboratory drug test processing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This consists of ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drug extraction from hair occurs at a lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), attributing to the complexity of hair drug screening methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used to confirm any positive screening results. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, which surpasses the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating in hair drug tests is highly improbable, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Offers historical perspective: Enables detection of drug usage patterns over time, unlike tests focused on recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Drug metabolite concentration in hair may be influenced by factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
