Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Melbourne Beach, Florida. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, offering nationwide testing centers ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are specific for employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probationers. The key advantage is a longer detection window, generally up to 90 days, an observed sample collection, and difficulty in tampering. Yet, for detecting recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing - Hair Testing

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective approach for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair chronicles a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the continuously growing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100 mg of hair, which is the optimal sample quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150 mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Procedure Summary

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system, which includes verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for abused drugs. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to hold in court. Any samples presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial specimen to prepare for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to the confirmation process if needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical consumption: It reveals drug use trends over time, beyond recent consumption.

Challenges:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests," the test actually scrutinizes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Melbourne Beach, FL, the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are significant. While both serve to detect drug use, hair testing offers superior detection over a longer period, capturing remnants of drug use inaccessible to urine tests. This attribute makes hair testing an ideal choice for companies aiming for rigorous drug policies.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle analysis provides an extensive overview of an individual's substance history. With its ability to uncover drug use not easily detected by other methods, hair testing emerges as a more reliable option. Employers who prioritize accuracy and comprehensiveness now find hair testing essential in their screening processes.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers a remarkable 90-day window for detecting drug use in Melbourne Beach, FL, allowing employers to gain a broader view of an individual's substance history. This extended window is essential for understanding potential patterns of use that could impact workplace safety and performance.

The lengthy detection period offered by hair testing makes it unmatched in its ability to uncover long-term drug use. Employers benefit from detailed information otherwise unavailable through shorter-window tests, such as urine tests, ensuring diligent and informed hiring practices.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Melbourne Beach, FL, hair follicle tests are practically tamper-resistant, offering significant advantages over other testing methods. These tests significantly reduce the risk of sample adulteration due to their stringent collection and analysis procedures.

The reliability of hair testing lies in its resistance to tampering. The complex nature of hair collection minimizes attempts to alter results, guaranteeing results that employers can trust and rely upon. With hair testing, accuracy is assured, providing definitive answers in substance use testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
