Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Miami Lakes, Florida. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, hosting centers nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can be processed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation clients. Their primary advantage is a much longer drug detection window of up to 90 days, involving an observed collection process and being nearly uncheatable. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant mechanism in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When clipped close to the scalp, it can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch hair segment comprising roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) nearest the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG assessments, additional elements, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, collecting a similar amount of body hair is acceptable. By scalp hair, we specifically mean head hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (face, armpit, etc.).

Procedure Synopsis

The pivotal stages in the lab processing of a drug analysis result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This process includes ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any further necessary data not included via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a prompt preliminary examination for drug traces. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates verification for legal acceptance. Any samples showing initial positive results during Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample indicates a positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. During this process, drug compounds are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other procedures (such as urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All initially positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can recognize drug use up to 90 days, contrasted with urine tests which have a shorter usage window.
  • Resistance to deception: Manipulating results in a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It conveys a usage pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations often incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can sway the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the method actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
