Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Mims, Florida. Need a hair or alcohol test? We at Accredited Drug Testing excel in hair sample analysis with centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has surged in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation programs trust these tests for their long detection window, up to 90 days, and nearly foolproof collection method. Yet, for drug use in the recent 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses are increasingly regarded as an effective method for detecting substance use. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When hair is taken near the root, it can reveal drug and alcohol intake over roughly a 3-month duration. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the root yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, additional panels, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test procedure in a lab primarily consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial input of a sample into the lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample's secure sealing and proper shipping, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening is economically efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be verified for court admissibility. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests as presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug tests the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of positive results from Screening is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS technologies. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine evaluations which have a shorter detection span.
  • Cheating prevention: Altering results in a hair drug evaluation is considerably difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It offers an overview of drug patterns over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to reveal recent usage: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically come at a higher cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," these assessments actually analyze the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the skin

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Mims, FL

Hair follicle testing proves its superiority over urine tests in several ways
particularly in its extended detection period and reliability. While urine tests are common, they lack the retrospective breadth that hair tests provide, covering up to 90 days of substance use. This allows for a more comprehensive understanding of a person's drug history.

The accuracy of hair tests is unparalleled. They are not only harder to tamper with but also provide results that employers can trust. This method offers a competitive edge, especially for those prioritizing thorough background checks in their hiring processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
