For those in Munson, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing spans all cities Nationwide with accessible centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head is needed, though body hair alternatives exist. Our testing provides analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method for substance detection. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair over urine testing. This method is crucial for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The significant advantage of hair testing lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under watchful procedures, and its resistance to manipulation. Despite its limitations in identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair shaft can capture and retain biomarkers from substances, providing an extended history of drug and alcohol use. When sampled near the scalp, hair testing offers up to a roughly 3-month period for detecting drugs and alcohol. The procedure for collecting hair is straightforward, not easily subject to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which serves as the optimal quantity for initial tests and validations. For EtG, supplemental screenings, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair. On the other hand, body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The lab assessment of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample’s preliminary integration into a lab's workflow. This step ensures the sample is sealed correctly, tracks its transportation, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a swift preliminary assessment intended to identify drug presence. While Screening is cost-efficient for exempting most samples from drug use suspicion, any positive results from Screening must undergo Confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further validation.

Upon a sample returning a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for the Extraction process. In this phase, hair is subjected to an extraction process to isolate drugs at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva tests), highlighting the complexities of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome undergoes testing via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is rinsed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory proceedings, from Accessioning through Confirmation, are audited following CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines alongside ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with shorter durations for urine tests.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, yielding more trustworthy results.
  • Chronological data: Provides insights into addiction patterns over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment involves examining the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
