Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug testing in Nokomis, FL. When in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, expertise in hair testing is available at various testing sites nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically required. Hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing requests.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation, hair tests offer up to 90-day detection and are nearly cheat-proof, recommended except when testing recent 5-day usage, where urine tests still prevail.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. The hair captures a prolonged timeline of drug consumption, including alcohol, by embedding biomarkers in its growing strand structure. When sourced near the scalp, this method can reveal drug or alcohol use for up to three months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional testing, or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be used. The term "head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is first integrated into the lab’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAB (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entries not fulfilled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary review for signs of drug use. Although Screening is a cost-effective option for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed for admissibility in legal settings. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require further Confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive at the Screening level, more hair is extracted from the initial batch for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

The Confirmation of any screening positives is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, compared to shorter-term detection possible with urine tests.
  • Low likelihood of deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly improbable, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers usage patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug usage over extended periods rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to reveal recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair strands.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing generally incurs greater expense compared to other testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why is hair follicle testing superior to urine testing in Nokomis, FL? Primarily, hair tests offer a longer detection window, ensuring more comprehensive insight into drug use patterns. Compared to traditional urine tests, which detect recent use, hair tests are more reliable and harder to manipulate, reducing risks of improper results.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Nokomis, FL benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing. Capturing drug use history up to 90 days, it provides detailed information on an individual's substance use, giving a broader picture compared to short-term detection methods, thereby aiding in better-informed employment decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
