In North De Land, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our centers across all cities Nationwide are well-equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, hair samples from the crown or body are required, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches. Tests can identify drug or alcohol use, including ETG, among other tailored options.

Hair follicle testing has become a popular drug testing method over recent years. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse support professionals now prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are utilized by those with stringent anti-drug policies due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days. They are tough to evade and are collected under supervision. However, urine tests remain superior for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol intake by capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. Hair collected near the scalp can provide a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of nearly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, an ideal amount for testing. For EtG, additional substances, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is insufficient, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. When referencing head hair, it implies only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into the lab's system. This step includes confirming proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional entries not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening involves an initial quick scan for drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly way to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be valid legally. Samples marked as positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

When a sample has a positive outcome in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial collection for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all positive samples are cleansed as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have briefer detection periods.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is notably tough to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage patterns: It can outline drug usage trends over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is somewhat misleading since the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle itself.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In North De Land, FL, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over conventional urine testing. Accuracy is at the forefront, with hair tests proving superior in tracing substance use. They detect drugs over a longer span, giving a more comprehensive picture.

Unlike urine tests, which are vulnerable to tampering and have shorter detection windows, hair testing remains reliable and false-proof, ensuring better trustworthiness in drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

In North De Land, FL, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing stands out. Unlike shorter-term solutions, hair tests chronicle substance use over a remarkable span of 90 days. This method provides comprehensive insights into an individual's drug history.

The longevity of this detection capability allows employers to gain detailed understanding of their personnel's substance habits, fostering a clearer oversight environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
