In North Port, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair testing is supported by nationwide centers capable of such testing. Generally, individuals must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. This method allows for tests on drugs, alcohol/ETG, or unique options.

Lately, the trend of drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle analyses. Preferred by employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse experts, it often replaces the typical urine analysis. Hair tests are chosen by zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and those on probation due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days, witnessed collection procedure, and reduced risk of manipulation. Conversely, when detecting usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by enclosing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair samples offer up to an estimated three-month detection period for alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, making it optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. The specimen should be measured with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, body hair in an equivalent amount can be used. Referring to head hair implies scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake of a sample into a lab system, checking that it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, but a positive finding requires confirmation to be valid in court. Presumptive positive samples from Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial collection and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are obtained from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positives are washed as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation undergo evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper: Hair drug tests are notoriously difficult to deceive, which enhances result reliability.
  • Provides usage history: These tests can show a pattern of drug use over a timeframe, unlike tests that indicate only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair typically takes 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and how individual hair grows can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often mislabeled as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair shaft, not the follicle under the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in North Port, FL, emerges superior to urine tests in numerous ways. Harbored Accuracy stands out, as hair tests effectively capture substance use over extended periods, evading the narrow detection window of urine tests.
While urine tests offer only a brief history, hair testing provides a complete three-month overview, enabling employers to make well-informed decisions.

Extended Detection Window

One compelling advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. In North Port, FL, this wide reach means that employers gain a comprehensive perspective on an individual's past substance intake, far beyond the limited scope provided by shorter testing protocols.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
